Ribbon seals are easily recognised because of the eye-catching white ribbons round their neck, front flippers and pelvis. The seals' basic colour is chocolate brown (dark brown). The ribbon seals' head is pinched and looks somewhat catlike. Their snout is short and their big eyes are close-set. Male seals markings usually are clearer than femals' markings. The pups, born during spring time on floating ice floes, have a wooly, white fur. After moulting their colour becomces blueish grey. These seals mainly eat codfish.
